Newborn Photographer warlingham Caterham surrey

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of baby Oliver in the studio . Born 4 weeks early at just 5lb he was tiny! The nicest thing about this sesion was that just two years earlier I photographed his older brother Zac so it was lovely to welcome them all back with their new addition.

What to wear to a photo session

Co-ordinating your clothes for a photo session is key to a gallery of photos your going to be pleased with. It really can make or break the final look of your images.

There’s no set colour scheme thats right or wrong but keeping tones co-ordinated and using a colour palette that works for you and also make sure your comfortable.

A session will often involve getting down on the floor so you need to be able to move in your clothes.

A studio session is also best done in bare feet. Shoes can look clumpy and formal and socks are usually in different colors and can be distracting in the images.

Also consider the style of clothing, do you want casual? romantic? vintage?

Ive put together a pinterest board of ideas and inspiration for you to look at

If your session is just for your children then its even easier.

simple and neutral white dresses are always good for girls. chinos and shorts for boys.

Try to avoid t-shirts with prints on. keep them plain, bright colours can look  great too but

If your planning on hanging these pictures on walls in your house , have a think about your colour schemes. If you have a very neautral style at home you may want to keep your  pictures the same or you may wantt o use the images to add a splash of colour?

Lastly Bring a selection! Im happy to have outfit changes and we can decide whats best once you get there if your not sure.

Baby Beau,6 days new, newborn photography.

A couple of weeks ago Baby Beau came to the studio. He was just 6 days old and was so chilled and relaxed that  we managed to work through lots of poses with him. One of the advantages of booking in after your 20 week scan like his Mummy did is that we were able to get him in the studio as early as we did. It means that the babies are still really sleepy and very curly and it makes the session a much easier operation. I pride myself on being able to work with a baby at any age but if these are the type of pictures you want be sure to book in early 🙂

Beau’s Daddy served in the marines and is now a fire fighter so they brought in some props which worked out great.

Why Newborn photography?

I started my child bearing years quite young, I was 22 when my partner and I decided to have our first child, we had our first mortgage and were settling in to grown up life very nicely. Charlie was born and I was forever taking photographs of him. Back then in 1999 it was all on film and so I’d rush to the chemist to get my next roll of film developed. 5 years later Maisie came along and digital had arrived for the average consumer.  It was the birth of Maisie that led me to wanting to get some newborn photos done! However I couldn’t afford the guy that I had seen in several places and so decided (classic) that I would buy my own camera and do it myself!!!!!!!  What was I thinking? She was about 6 months old by the time I got my first SLR. I had no idea how to use it and the results are really quite hilarious!  but well you make your own mind up! epic fail!

Over the next few years I  upgraded my camera to a super-duper one, shot a few weddings and mainly did family photography in people’s homes. However I wasnt making any money and times were hard so I had to say bye-bye to my beloved 5d and give it all up. Then when Maisie was 4 and a half we had Poppy  🙂  our third and last child and I had no camera except my original SLR. I started to see all these amazing photos of newborn babies from the states and there was where my new passion was born. So new camera, new business and lots of training followed!

However with all three babies the only professional photos I ever had done were in a high street store with my first and well lets just say I never went back there. They were awful!

For some people it’s not something they think about until the baby is a few weeks old, which is fine but you will find many photographers won’t photograph a newborn over two weeks old so it’s always best to book in when your pregnant and still half awake 🙂

So if there’s one thing I would do different now is that with so much choice now for newborn photography I would most definitely document this all to quickly passing tiny stage in their life properly.

They grow so fast and although at the time you think you are going to remember every tiny detail, you really don’t. Before you know it you are in ore of the next stage, their smiles, their giggles, their first steps and words and those early days are just a tired blur of sleepless nights and visitors.

Invest in your memories, you won’t regret it!

The Delight Retreat

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be part of the very first, ‘Delight Retreat’! A three day course for photographers hosted by the very talented Vicki Knights photography. The aim of the game was to spend three lovely days learning and soaking up the knowledge that Vicki was going to share with us. The course was to cover marketing, branding, and so so much more. We all stayed together at Florence house, in Seaford West Sussex. A beautiful setting that delivered beautiful homemade food and was just the perfect place to relax and soak up all the information Vicki was delivering to us! Not to mention a few glasses of bubbly 🙂 Vicki Knight’s right hand woman was the beautiful Vicky Homes (with a Y) from Vicky Holmes Photography She was there to not only learn like us but to help look after us all and be chief behind the scenes photographer. Pictures below all taken by her good self.2016-04-29_0003

Included in our stay was the opportunity to watch Vicki work and see how she runs a typical family outdoor portrait session. Our surroundings were so wonderful and just provided so many photo opportunities including the nearby beach! We all got to shoot at the same time as Vicki and so all went home with our own images from the sessions.

On the last day we got to see how Vicki would work through a baby session in a home setting and again Florence house lent itself beautifully towards it.

I feel blessed to have been part of the first ‘Delight Retreat’ and have taken so much away from it. I know she plans to run more and I would urge any photographer who is trying to find his or her way in this competitive industry to consider Vicki’s next retreat. I can honestly say that it was a great investment, I have made lots of new friends and acquired a new lens because of it! Happy days! 🙂

Baby Joshua

Last week I had a visit from  little Joshua. Joshua had a very excited Mummy and couldnt wait to have his photographs done. Joshua was about 11 days old but only a small one at just 7lbs. He slept really well and we had a great session.

Remember to book in by your third trimester of pregnancy. We aim to capture newborns under 10 days so we can get those sleepy curly pictures, So if you leave booking till they are born I may not be able to fit them in.

Enjoy 🙂
